Why do we celebrate NAIDOC Week? We celebrate NAIDOC Week to honour the history, culture and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples — and to recognise their continuing strength, resilience and connection to Country. It's a week for all Australians to listen, learn and take part, and to support the next generation of First Nations leaders, makers and storytellers.

What is the 2026 NAIDOC Week theme? The 2026 theme is 50 Years of Deadly — a celebration of five decades of NAIDOC and the cultural excellence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander English, deadly means excellent, brilliant or outstanding. After fifty years of NAIDOC, it's the only word that fits.

What does deadly mean? Deadly means excellent, awesome or outstanding — a word of pride, praise and celebration used to recognise skill, achievement and cultural strength. A powerful performance, a new artwork, a young leader, a grandmother's weaving — all can be described as deadly.

What NAIDOC Week activities are on at Broadway Sydney? Plenty. 50 Years of Deadly takes over the centre with a four-storey hero artwork by Jessica Johnson, the Lucky Market with First Nations makers, hands-on Minis workshops led by First Nations artists, the Indigenous Literacy Foundation Book Swap with Target and QBD Books, a community photography exhibition with Glebe NAIDOC, live performances, soundscapes and more.
