The 2026 NAIDOC Week Theme: 50 Years of Deadly
This year marks a milestone. 50 Years Deadly celebrates five decades of NAIDOC Week — five decades of culture, community and continuing strength. It's a moment to honour how far we've come, and a powerful reminder of how much further the journey extends.
The theme is both a reflection and a declaration. It honours the Elders, organisers, artists, activists and communities who carried NAIDOC forward year after year — ensuring it stayed grounded in culture, in community, and in truth. This milestone didn't happen by chance. Generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples refused to be silenced, and built a movement that today reaches every corner of the country.
Deadly is a word of pride. It means excellent, brilliant, outstanding. It's a word used to lift up culture, achievement and identity — and after fifty years of NAIDOC, it's the only word that fits.
NAIDOC has always been more than a single week. It's a platform for truth-telling, a celebration of identity, and a statement of continuity — a reminder that culture is not preserved, it is lived.
At Broadway, we're proud to celebrate 50 Years of Deadly with our community — through Jessica Johnson's hero artwork, a week-long program of activations, and a centre filled with the colour, sound and spirit of NAIDOC. Find out What's On Here.
