Celebrating Rainbow Families: Support and Resources for LGBTIQ+ Parents
Every family deserves to be seen, celebrated, and supported
Love makes a family -and families come in all beautiful shapes, sizes, and colours. At Broadway Sydney, we're proud to celebrate and support rainbow families: LGBTIQ+ parents and their children who make our community richer, brighter, and more vibrant every single day.
As a proud Welcome Here member, Broadway Sydney is committed to creating inclusive spaces where all families feel welcome. This Mardi Gras season and beyond, we want to shine a spotlight on an incredible organisation doing vital work for LGBTIQ+ families across Australia: Rainbow Families.
What is Rainbow Families?
Rainbow Families is Australia's leading peak organisation supporting LGBTIQ+ parents and their children. From lesbian mums and gay dads to trans, bisexual, and queer parents - and everyone in between - Rainbow Families champions inclusion, provides essential resources, and advocates for equality at every stage of family life.
What started as a grassroots group of parents seeking connection has grown into a national charity that supports thousands of LGBTIQ+ families across the country. They offer playgroups, antenatal classes, resilience programs, educational resources, and critical advocacy work that's changing laws and lives.
Why Rainbow Families Matters
LGBTIQ+ families face unique challenges - from navigating fertility options and legal parentage to finding inclusive childcare and dealing with discrimination. Rainbow Families steps in to fill these gaps with practical support and powerful advocacy.
Here's what they do:
Community Connection
- LGBTIQ+ playgroups where kids and families can connect and belong
- Youth groups for children from rainbow families (Little Rainbows for ages 9 - 12)
- Family camps and events that build resilience and celebrate diversity
- Peer support networks for parents navigating the journey together
Education & Resources
- Australia's first LGBTIQ+ antenatal classes
- Inclusive Language Birthing Kit (co-created with queer midwives)
- Parenting guides, tip sheets, and webinars designed by and for the community
- Training for educators and healthcare providers on LGBTIQ+ family inclusion
Advocacy & Legal Reform
- Fighting for surrogacy law reform and legal recognition of all parents
- Pushing for inclusive government services and documentation
- Campaigning against discrimination in schools, healthcare, and public spaces
- Ensuring LGBTIQ+ families have the same rights and protections as all families
