Celebrating JOY: Spencer Harrison's Dazzling Installation at Broadway Sydney This Mardi Gras season, Broadway Sydney is glowing with pure, unapologetic JOY. Queer Australian artist Spencer Harrison's breathtaking installation transforms our space into a kaleidoscope of colour and light, inviting everyone to dance, strut, and celebrate exactly who they are. JOY features oversized coloured perspex "jewels"—vibrant triangles, circles, and teardrops that hang like chandelier gems throughout Broadway Sydney. As natural light streams through the centre, these spectacular forms cast dancing rainbows of light throughout the CEntre, creating an ever-changing play of colour that shifts throughout the day. Originally commissioned by Museums Victoria for the Melbourne Immigration Museum's 2024 Joy exhibition, Bring it to the Runway, Runway draws on the aesthetics and visual vocabulary of drag, nightclubs, and fashion runways. It's designed to queer the architecture of the space and create a welcoming environment where you can celebrate who you are. The installation includes both the physical artwork and photographs and decals throughout the centre, extending the celebration to every corner of Broadway Sydney. For Harrison, colour isn't decorative - it's powerful. As a queer artist, he uses colour as a form of joy that can be a powerful political force to celebrate and bring visibility to members of the LGBTIQ+ community. In the face of oppression, colour becomes protest. In the hands of this artist, joy becomes resistance. "Colour is joyful and this joy can be a powerful form of protest, that counters and contrasts with the rigid control of oppressive structures," Harrison explains. As you wander through Broadway - look up. Let the colours wash over you. Feel the joy. Whether you're part of the LGBTIQ+ community or a proud ally, whether you're here for Fair Day across the road at Victoria Park or exploring fashion stores Broadway Sydney and Sydney retail stores, JOY invites you to be part of something bigger—to see beauty in colour, power in visibility, and strength in celebration.
